The Menin Gate

menin_gateSince the 1920s at exactly 2000 hours, or 8:00 pm, every night the sound of the bugle can be heard in the Belgium town of Ypres, as the local fireman play The Last Post under The Menin Gate as a salute to the many soldiers who fell during The Great War of 1914 – 1918.

It is without doubt one of the most moving moments that you can witness as you make your way along The Western Front, and recently I had the great pleasure to take part in the ceremony during a battlefield tour of The Ypres Salient and The Somme Battlefields.

The Menin Gate recently celebrated the 30,000 Last post ceremony – Click here for full details
